THE PLACE WHERE WE LIVE

BRAINSTORM
What they already know....

The Earth has countries.
The earth has land, air and water.
On the Earth there are flowers, animals, mountains, and minerals.
The Earth has only one Moon.
On the Earth there are living and non-living things.
The Earth is sorrounded by something that help us breath.
The Earth is part of the Solar System.
The Earth moves arouid the sun, it´s the fourth ring.

THE EARTH
We live on planet called  the Earth.  The Sun is the closest star to Earth.Life on Earth is possible beacuse of the heat and light it recieves from the Sun.

The Earth is located 150 million kilometres from the Sun. It has one natural satellite called the Moon.
The Earth and its Moon form part of the Solar System.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The Solar System consits of the Sun, eight planets and various other Celestial Bodies. The planets and the other celestial bodies all orbit the Sun.
The Sun is a star located at the centre of the Solar System.
The planets, in order from the Sun are:Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Satellites are celestial bodies which orbit a planet. They do not emit
light.

Asteroids are small rocky objects. We can find the most asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Comets are celestial bodies made of ice and dust that orbit the Sun.

Planet Earth

Earth is one of the eight planets in the Solar system and has several characteristics that make life possible.

Energy (heat and light): Comes from the Sun.
The atmosphere: Aprotective layer of air that regulates temperature.
Water: Which covers most of the planet´s surface.
Even if don´t notice it, Earth is moving all the time. This is because it rotates on its own axis.

Rotation is the process of Earth turning on its axis. It rotates in an anti-clockwise direction and full rotation takes 24 hours, a day. That´s why we have day and night.

Day and night. The sun only illuminates one half of Earth´s surface at a time. It´s day in one part of the world and night in another.

In addition to turning on its axis, Earth also orbits the Sun. Earth´s orbit takes aproximately 365 days (one year) to complete one orbit of the Sun. This is why the amount of energy (light and heat) Earth receives varies and there are four seasons: Spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The Moon
From Earth we can see our only natural satellite, the Moon. It´s four times smaller than Earth. We can see the Moon from Earth beause it reflects the light from the Sun. It takes 28 days to revolve around the Earth. We can only see one  half of the Moon from Earth, because apart from revolving around the Earth it´s also spinning on its axis.
The Moon also travels around the Sun.

Lunar Phases
If we look at the Moon over a month, you can see it appear to change shape. These changes are called Lunar Phases.
There are eight lunar phases each month:

New Moon: The Moon is not illuminated.
Waxing Moon: The Moon is partially illuminated.
Full Moon: The Moon is completely iluminated.
Wanning Moon: The Moon is partially illuminated.

The Moon has seas ( large black spots on the surface), craters  and   mountain ranges.

  A little bit of reading

THE EARTH´S INSIDE
The Earth is diveded into four layers. Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle and Crust.

REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH

MAPS.

Maps are common objects. We see them every day, we use them when we travel, and we refer to them often, but what is a map?
A map is  a representation, usually on a flat surface, of a whole or part of an area. There are many different types of maps that attempt to represent specific things. Maps can display political boundaries, population, physical features, natural resources, natural resources, roads, climates, economic activities...
This  map represents Spain, the country where we live. In this map you can see the different regions ( Comunidades Autonomas) in which Spain is diveded. This kind of map is known as Political Map.
Political Maps  show governmental boundaries of countries, states, Autonomous communities, the location of major cities, and they usually include significant bodies of water.
This map represents the physical  features of Europe, the continent in which we live. This map is a Physical Map where we can see mountains ranges, islands, rivers, and seas.
Physical Maps display the natural features of the earth - the location and names of mountains, rivers, valleys, ocena currents, and deserts.
 This is a Globe
Globes are also maps in which  the Earth is three-dimensional and  spherical .There are Globes which represent other Celestial bodies such as the Moon o other planets.
The one which represents the Earth is  called Terrestial Globe.

 CONTINENTS

CONTINENTS. GAMES TO PRACTICEƇ

 SPAIN
Spain is divided in 17 areas called Autonomous Communities. Autonomous means that each of these
autonomous communities has its own Executive Power.
These are the 17 Communities.

Spain has several rivers and mountains.
