INVENTIONS AND INVENTORS

Finding a use for something that already exists in nature, is a discovery. Creating something new, is an invention.
Fire and salt are not inventions, They already existed in nature.
Spoons and phones are inventions.
An invention happens when someone has a new idea.
Great inventions
Inventions change people´s life.

 The first faucet
The ancient Egyptians and Greeksdeveloped the firts plumbing System to  direct water for drinking and irrigating theirs crops.
The first faucet would have been invented during this time. In 1800 Thomas Gryeld, an iromongers from England developed a screw down a faucet that shut the water off gradually. (Elvira 2nd A)

MEANS OF TRANSPORT

Transportation is used to carry people and goods from one place to another.  We can move through  the air, over land or on the sea.

There are different type of transport:
Car, buses, trucks, lorries, motorbike, vans, caravans, monocycles, bikes, boats, ships, submarines, airplanes, helicopters, rockets...

Cars, buses, trucks, vans, caravans move on  roads or motorways. Many roads and motorways go through tunnes and over bridges. There are petrol stationms near roads and traffic signs to help drivers.

Song lyrics

Road Safety Song: Stop, Look and Listen

Feel the rhythm of your busy street

Cars bikes busses look around and you will see

Babies and buggies making a fuss

People rushin’ rushin’, runnin’ and a rushin’

But if you wanna cross the street

You gotta stop, look listen and check to the left and check to the right

And then you double check to make sure that you’re right

Yeah yeah (x2)

Wanna keep safe? So listen to me

Cause every crossing is a good place to be

Black and white lines, flashing lights

People rushin’ rushin’

Runnin’ and a rushin’

But if you wanna cross the street

You gotta stop, look listen and check to the left and check to the right

And then you double check to make sure that you’re right

A pelican crossing is another good place to be

Push the button and wait for the beep

When you see the green man, it’s safe to cross

People rushin’ rushin’

Runnin’ and a rushin’

But if you wanna cross the street

You gotta stop, look listen and check to the left and check to the right

And then you double check to make sure that you’re right

And never never cross if you can’t clearly see

If there is a hand to old, hold it tight

Listen to your grown-ups and you’ll be safe

People rushin’ rushin

Runnin’ and a rushin

But if you wanna cross the street

You gotta stop, look listen and check to the left and check to the right

And then you double check to make sure that you’re right

(CHORUS X4)

Trains move on railway lines. They stop at stations. In some cities there are trains which travel under the ground,  they are called the underground.

Ships, boats and yatches sail on oceans, seas and rivers. Ships leave and pick up goods and passangers in ports.

Planes fly along special paths in the air. They take off and land at airports.

PLAY AND PRACTICE

A PLANET CALLED THE EARTH.

We live on a planet called the Earth.  Our Earth is made out of three things:
Land. Land is where the trees grow, people live and where we walk on.
Water. There is more water on Earth than land. Water is our oceans, lakes and rivers, where dolphins and fish  live and  boats can travel.
Air. Air is what we breath, we can´t see it, but we can feel it.

Most of the water on Earth is in seas and oceans. It is salt water. The water in river and  lakes and underground water is fresh water.  The fresh water  comes from rain, and snow and ice melting. We can treat this water and drink it. In the polar regions the water is ice or snow.
Land is the part above the water. An island is a small land mass sourrounded by water. A continent is a large mass land.

WHAT IS IN THE SKY?
The Sun is what gives us warmth, what gets us day light. The Sun is a star. It´s a big ball of fire. There are also planets, like the Earth, and satellites, like the Moon. They are all parte of the Solar System, which means that they all go around the Sun.

  Curios facts about the planets.

 CITIES AND TOWNS

We have started talking about cities, towns and the countryside.

We live in a beautiful country called Spain. Spain is in Europe. Spain has mountains; some of the land is semi-desert and  has a long coastline which borders the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea.
Madrid is the capital city.

Our school is in Madrid City.  We all live in Madrid.
In Madrid there are more than three million inhabitants.

In Madrid there are lots of buildings and houses. There are many streets with  lots of cars. But, there are also parks and trees. We like Madrid because there are lots of things to do. You can go to the cinema, to the theatre, to the zoo... If you like visiting museums there are lots of them. You can also go to the shops, and if you need  to go to the doctor, it´s easy to find a health centre or hospital.
You can go to a football stadium and watch your favorite team playing, but you can also go to an sport centre and exercise.

There are other cities in Spain. They are not all inland, like Madrid. Some of them are by the sea , and  some  are on the mountains.

Valencia y Barcelona are by the sea.

Granada is very near the mountains.

All town and cities have a mayor and councillors. They organise the services for all inhabitans. They work in the town hall.
Many people work in public services. They help to make the life of the citizens easier, postmen and postwomen, police officers, gardeners, firefigters, road sweepers...

 HEALTH AND GROWTH

We have learnt about the body. Now it´s time to talk about keeping it healthy.

Food is also very important. Do you remember?

Play and practice. Health and growth

  HUMAN BODY

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Our digestive system breaks down the food we eat into nutrients and carries the nutrients into our blood. It is made up of the mouth, the gullet, the stomach, the small intestine and the large intestine.

Respiratory system
Our resspiratory system carries oxygen from the air we beathe to our blood. It is made up of the nose, thewindpipe and the lungs.

Circulatoy System.
Our circulatory System  carries nutrients from the food we eat and oxygen from the air we breath all over our body. It is made up of the heart and the blood vessels.

Locomotor system.
Our Locomotor system makes our body move. It is made up of bones and muscles. It uses nutrients and oxygen.

EXPERIMENT

Bones are very important. They need calcium to keep strong and hard. To help this we have to eat healthy food and do exercise. We have made and experiment to see what happens when there is lack of  calcium.

January 29th.
Maya brought a chicken bone from her house. We were all touching it, smelling it  and feeling it. Then we put some vinager on a glass jar. Most of us tasted it. The flavour wasn´t very nice. It was sour. The we put the bone on the jar withe vinager. We put a sticker on the jar with date and the most important information. The bone was hard and rigid.

February 6th
We have taken out the bone from the vinager. The smell wasn´t very nice. We have been touching and feeling the bone again and... it´s not rigid anymore. Now the bone is flexible and soft. We have changed the vinager and put the bone back in. We´ll see next week

PLANTS

We have been to "the farm" where  we have learnt lots about plants.
Now in the classroom we are going to continue with this topic.
Children have brought beautiful plants  from their houses.

PARTS OF A PLANT

A beautiful story by  Eric Carle. The Tiny Seed.

Water moving through leaves

1) Take Cabbage  and slice a stalk halfway up the middle.
2) Place two clear containers close together. Add a few drops of food coloring in two different colors to the jars.
3) Add water to the jars to fill to about 1.5 inches deep.
4) Wait about 8 hours and observe the difference!

Plants use little tubes to transport water from where they have it (the ground, usually) to where they need it in their leaves.

 ANIMALS

LEARN ABOUT HABITATS

Last year we started learning about animals and the areas where they live. This year we are learning even more!
What´s your favourite animal?
Is it a mammal? Is it oviparous? Doest it eat plants or meat? Does it fly?

GUESS THE ANIMAL GAME

This is a song about animals,it talks about mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
And it´s for dancing too...
